FLOWER POWER Saturday October 1, the Sheep River Library will celebrate Alberta Art Days with an exhibition of quilts, paintings, and photos representing flowers as well as demonstrations and workshops. All artists are invited to enter. If you have works that you would like to share, call the library to be connected with the art coordinator, Palma. Children 6-12 are invited to make a Flower Crown to wear for the day. At 11am, there will be a talk on The Victorian Tradition of the Language of Flowers. This will be a presentation and demonstration of the historical symbology of plants and flowers answering such questions as “Why do we carry ivy in wedding bouquets? Why do roses represent love? Why do we say “don’t rest on your Laurels”? There will also be an opportunity to taste edible flowers. A domo on quilting with flowers will also be given in one of the meeting rooms.
Fall Activities in the Library Brochures for the fall courses scheduled at Sheep River Library were handed out earlier in August and are available at the library circulation desk. Rural homeowners will have received the Foothills Continuing Education Council booklet outlining all courses in the MD as well as Sheep River Library programs. The General Interest section of the library courses contains descriptions of great new learning experiences including Yoga for Beginners, teaching techniques for presenters, Fall Flower Wreath Making, Family History Genealogy, and an astronomy course- What’s Up In the Night Sky.
EVENT PLANNING WORKSHOP: Having trouble getting volunteers to help with your special events? The event planning workshop put on by Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation, a full day session including lunch, will help you with your planning and implementation. All clubs and organizations should send a couple of representatives to the “Event and Festival Planning Workshop” scheduled for Friday, October 21. The handout workbook is amazing!
School’s Out for PD DAYS: Every second Friday will be a day off for school kids. This may be a problem for some families, but the Sheep River Library has planned events for every one of these days. In cooperation with Oilfields High School and the licencing provided by Pharmasave, Friday Morning Movies will start at 10:30 in the morning. Arrive early to buy your popcorn and treats and settle in to watch great movies. Working with the Boys and Girls Club, afternoon speakers have been arranged including presentations on Bugs and Bees by Alexandria Farmer from Mount Royal University, Critters by Garry Pollock, a talk by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada utilizing a telescope that they are going to donate to the library, author Jacqueline Guest talking on her new book Ghost Messages, and Katie Pearson giving tips on Lost in the Woods! New board games, new youth books, and new ‘How To’ craft and arts books have been ordered to make your day! Plan on spending the full day at the library during the PD days. Sign up NOW!
PROGRAMS FOR MOMS and T0TS Sign up soon for the programs at the library that are co-sponsored by Literacy for Life. Toddler Time is for 2 and 3 year olds using thymes, finger plays, and music activities. Movers and Shakers is a rhythm and rhyme program for parents and 1 year olds. For parents/caregivers and babies newborn to 12 months, there is a program entitled Rhythm and Rhymes, to help moms meet new people while learning infant songs, rhymes and tips for early development. Book Buddies and Food Fun are for parents and their 3 to 4 year olds. The magic of sharing stories comes alive while making books out of household items. Register on line at www.litforlife.com or in person at the library. A brand new course for Mom and Tot is a YOGA class with instructor Margit. Get in shape with your baby or young tot on Thursday mornings starting Sept 22.
FILMS at the Library The Dog Tooth Mountain Film Group has created a window to the world right here in the Foothills by showing mainstream films from around the world – films that matter and films that challenge. On Monday, Sept 19 the first film of this season will be OKURIBITO (Departures), a film from Japan. These films are on the 3rd Monday of every month starting at 7pm.
NEW ARTIST: Landscape artist Deanna Smith held a reception at the library on August 20 to launch the show of her newest work. Deanna took up her brushes and pallet knife after a 20 year hiatus, and put down some paint and ideas on canvas. She was inspired by a painting program on television that utilized a technique that she had learned during painting classes in Lethbridge several years ago. A lover of the beauty of nature with its ever-changing panorama of seasons, Deanna is excited to share with you her paintings that capture the variations of blues in the sky and the reds and golds that exemplify the approach of dusk. Deanna’s art will be on display until September 27.
TERIFFIC TUESDAY TALKS: These afternoon sessions feature local experts who are willing to share their passion from 2 until 3:30 pm on the fourth Tuesday of every month. Sessions are followed by tea and conversation. The first session is September 27th featuring intrepid adventure traveler Marlis Haage. Her presentation The Route Less Traveled features stories from Central Asia, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Iran. Call the library 933-3278 to sign up.
COLLECTIONS: Every week, the library is receiving new books. The problem is, they seem to whisk off the shelves almost as fast as they arrive. Check out the web page to see the new titles that have recently arrived. Be sure to use your home computer or one of the computers at the library to put a hold on the book of your choice. As soon as it arrives back in the library, you will automatically be contacted by phone or email to let you know that it is waiting for you on the ‘holds’ shelf. Any book in the whole Marigold region can be accessed by a simple request. Take advantage of this excellent service.
Over the summer, a huge collection of quilt books has found a home at Sheep River Library. Many of these books were donated by the Flying Needle Quilt Guild, a Saturday group of quilters that meet at the Millarville Community Church on the second Saturday of every month. The Flying Needles hope that quilters in the Diamond Valley will appreciate this amazing selection of four shelves worth of books in the 700’s category. Enjoy!
MEMBERSHIPS are due for those of you who originally signed up at the beginning of the school year. Memberships are $10 a person or $20 per family for anyone residing in the Diamond Valley Area. Because the Sheep River Library’s operation budget is funded by both the Town of Turner Valley AND the Town of Black Diamond, all residents can take advantage of this low annual fee. Pick up a brochure at the library to find out all the services available to members including ever increasing fiction and non-fiction books, easy access to any book in Alberta, expanding reference sections, use of computers, wireless internet, audio and video selections, large print books, courses, workshops, and magazines.
Help! Don’t Let Them Die. Some of our magazines are about to expire on the shelves. The Four Wheeler subscription is destined run out soon! What will we do without Style at Home when this subscription lapses? And Outdoor Canada is breathing its last monthly breath as it slouches on the shelves gasping for a subscription renewal. If you can help revive these magazines, or others that are closing in on their deadlines, your donation will be greatly appreciated. Some magazines might really appreciate a three year subscription so that they don’t have to go through this anxiety every year. Any help that you can give to keep our magazine selections healthy will be recognized on our Magazine Donors wall.
